A blog about Maddy

Last night Madeleine mentioned that she and Jonny were Irish twins. I've never used that expression, though I'm guessing it means two kids very close together. It sounded funny coming from a 12-year old!

For a lot of reasons - because Jonny had Down syndrome and poor muscle tone, because he had major surgery and spent the first three weeks in the hospital (much of the time on morphine and a ventilator, and because I was too exhausted commuting between San Francisco and our other 6 children at home in Marin, I could not establish nursing with him.

The result was happy for all the other members of the family, who were thrilled to be able to finally participate in feeding a baby. And I was properly humbled (no more Supermom status ;)

And the happiest of all - Maddy was born 54 weeks later. And Maddy is the most consistently upbeat and happy person you'd ever want to meet. At 12, she counts Doris Day as her hero and the person she'd most like to be like when she grows up. She has a fabulous voice and fills our lives with music. I don't know what my life would be like without her.

Remember, she's homeschooling this year and we are together all day long. today she asked me:
*Why I didn't take her to act and sing on Broadway when she was little, and
*Why I always blogged about Jonny and not about her.

Here is Maddy as Huck Finn (I've been lookiong without much success for Maddy when she was Dorothy in Wizard of Oz):

So here it is - a blog about Maddy, the Irish twin, who doesn't need Broadway to be her mama's shining star!

What a wonderful girl you have there!! And beautiful too! I am a big Doris Day fan, as is my 80 year-old father-in-law.

I'm also an Irish twin. My sister is is 42 weeks younger than me. We were both born in 1963. For 2 months we're the same age.
