The Nativity Story

Our family went to see The Nativity Story tonight. It was very well done and showed some new perspectives I hadn't thought of before - like how Mary and Joseph must have felt to have all those shepherds suddenly showing up to see the Messiah.
Their relationship was beautifully portrayed, as was the realistic reaction of the people of Nazareth to the unexplained pregnancy.
Definitely worth seeing - and a good way to give your children a deeper understanding of Christ's birth. This kind of experience - and the shared family memory - is worth more than ANY present you can give your children on Christmas morning! All of our children were mesmerized - even Daniel, who I worried might react negatively because it wasn't animated. And afterwards, they talked about "the baby Jesus." I think this went a long way to helping my guys with Down syndrome get it.

I agree! We loved it!
(P.S. Did your kids yell, "I just saw Baby Jesus's butt" or are mine the only sacriligious oddballs out there?)

I'm glad you liked it. I really liked it as well. Like you said, you totally get a feel for the humanity of Mary & Joseph. I also liked how Gabriel delivered the news. Hearing scripture quoted was also very ... touching ...

I love when I read a post, and say, "That's exactly what I think".
I went to The Nativity Story with my parents to "preview" and I loved it, so another night I took my dh and two of the children, and my grandparents. I thought the movie would make it "more real" rather than just reading the story (which we will do anyway, of course).
I loved how God had given Mary the comfort of Elizabeth (who knew the truth) for those six months. Also, Joseph was portrayed as such a kind, gentle man.
It was a great movie! I highly recommend it as well.

Thanks Barbara for the review. We intend to take our boys to see it tomorrow morning! What an awesome way to kick off the Christmas weekend in the right mindset!
Merry Christmas to all!

I have to ask...what do you think of the fact that they are using a 16 y/o girl who is pregnant and not married, as the Mary?
I'm at a crossroads on this. I realize that Mary was an unwed virgin, but the fact that they have made this quite a public spectacle just makes it hard for me on a moral ground
I'd be interested in hearing other opinions. This is a wonderful movie from all I have heard...but is is a good platform for spreading God's word and the story of Jesus, when you have this unacceptable behavior?

What age range would you recommend for this movie?
