Two Christian writers need prayer

Received these two emails yesterday:

Hi friends:

I just had some very serious news from Cec Murphey. His home burned down to the ground this morning and his son-in-law was killed in the fire. He sounded shaken, but okay. I told him that I would spread the word for prayer support.

Philip Yancey has been in a very bad automobile accident in New Mexico this afternoon (we are not really sure of the time of accident). He has suffered a possible broken vertebrae in his neck and possible puncture of his aorta.

He was lucid enough (thanks to his good physical shape and mental capabilities) to call his mother and let her know. He asked that she call us and get prayers started among the believers we know here. Janet is on her way to where the accident happened in New Mexico. Please pray for her safety as she drives in the terrible Colorado weather.

Philip told his mother that he totaled his car. . .saw all his belongings on the road. . .he is in great pain and on morphine. He has been told that they may "life flight" him back to Denver as soon as he is stabilized.

I always think that Christian writers need as much prayer support as we give missionaries (and actually many could use the same kind of financial support, but no church that I know of supports writers-in-residence). Our work is very solitary and we have an enemy who can be pretty relentless. (I recently went through a week of feeling very oppressed - though I never got around to writing about it :) and as an eternal optimist, I'm just wired to escape the depths pretty quickly).

Cec Murphy is one of the kindest, most gracious Christian writers you'd ever want to meet. And I though I only know Phil Yancey from afar (I heard him speak at EPA), he is a real and genuine kind of guy.

Please pray for these men that their health and work will continue.

Love,

I checked Philip Yancey's website (http://www.philipyancey.com/) and he gives a full account of the accident. He's been released already and although did suffer an injury, it turned out to be not as serious as they first feared.

I attended a mentoring workshop with Cecil just a few weeks ago. I am deeply grateful to him for his encouragement and tough love.

Best Wishes, Cec. :-)
