Melinda Doolittle sings about God on American Idol
I've said before that Christians who write off American Idol are guilty of contempt prior to investigation. Every season the finalists are stacked with Christians because - you know what? - Christians sing more than most people. We grow up singing in church and so we have more practice and we're just more comfortable. Add to that the joy of the Lord and you have a real winning situation for a singing competition.
If you didn't see Melinda Doolittle's performance last night, you really should. It was their Idol Gives Back night - where they're highlighting helping kids all over the world, from Africa to Los Angeles food banks. The six remaining contestants did socially conscious songs. Melinda chose a Faith Hill Song: There Will Come a Day. Watch and then read the lyrics:
Wars are raging
Lives are scattered
Innocence is lost
And hopes are shattered
The old are forgotten
The children are forsaken
In this world we're living in
Isn't anything sacredThere's a better place
Where our Father waits
And every tear
He'll wipe away
The darkness will be gone
The weak shall be strong
Hold on to your faith
There will come a day
There will come a daySong will ring out
Down those golden streets
The voices of earth
The angels will sing
Every knee will bow
Sin will have no trace
In the glory of His amazing grace
Every knee will bow
Sin will have no trace
In the glory of His amazing grace
There will come a day
There will come a day
Oh, there will come a day
There will come a day
I know there's coming a day
Coming a day
I have loved Melinda Doolittle since Day One of this season. She has been a backup singer and never been in the spotlight before. She's a really humble and gracious person, but she is a powerhouse of talent. Every single week she turns in a fabulous performance no matter the genre. You can catch all her performances by searching her name at YouTube.
One reason I watch American Idol with my kids is that there's so much to learn from it. One of the striking things about Melinda is her humility even as she exercises the gift God has given her to the best advantage. I will never forget when Simon Cowell, the harshest critic on the show (and my favorite because he's honest), said:
“Melinda, we have a lot of people who come in here with a lot of attitude and a lot of confidence, and they’re not very good. You walk in with no confidence, no attitude, and yet you are a brilliant singer...a brilliant singer, seriously, you know you are what it’s all about, a great voice.

I did see Melinda's performance last night and it was incredible-both her talent and song choice! I have also followed Melinda since the beginning of the competition, and I really appreciate her humility and modest clothing choices.

I'm one of those people who wrote off American Idol--until I started watching about two months ago. I got hooked on Melinda, Lakisha, Phil, Jordan, and even Sanjaya. :-)
I was embarrassed to admit it.
When I saw the Gospel Music Association was following Jordan, Melinda, and Phil, and Chris Sligh was a music minister, I was a little less embarrassed.
I loved Melinda's performance last night. After all the bad news on tv lately, it was a tonic. This morning, thinking of it reminded of your motto: say something with hope in it. She really did.

It's not a programme I watch, although I probably ought to try and be a little more mainstream. You're right, she has an incredible voice.
Cheers

We are avid American Idol watchers here in the UK...we don't actually get the show until Friday night so I will look forward to it. I like Melinda and loved how she responded to Ryan Seacrest asking her to pick between the two groups ( Lowest and highest votes) last week...she is a shy woman, but she knows her own mind.

We don't like watching American Idol because of the way that the young women tend to dress (or...not dress!). I think that American Idol should take the initiative there and promote a better dress code and in so doing take the focus off the sexuality and put the focus on the singers with true talent.
Melinda is a breath of fresh air - it's a pleasure to listen to her beautiful voice and to see that she represents Christ in many areas - including her wardrobe choices.

We LOVE American idol!!! It is a clean, family-friendly show, and you can't say that about many shows on TV today!

Barbara, I so appreciate and agree with your comments regarding Melinda. She is a lovely Christian lady who is showing the world what it means to live your faith. Her face shines, she honors her friends, she looks beautiful modestly, and she sings for the Lord. I happen to KNOW she is really that lovely because I used to work with her mother, who is just as lovely. Blessings from Sonoma County!

When she sang the line, "Every knee will bow..." I got chills. Millions of people were listening to her sing that did not realize the truth and enormity of this statement. I like her, too.

I just saw this today from LifeNews, about Idol Gives Back donating to some organizations that push abortions. Your thoughts?
