Boys being boys

If you haven't visited my friend Carol at Parenting Decisions, today's a good time as she has some great pictures up of her boys "sword"-fighting.

I'm already on my way to Amazon to try to find some swords like these for my little guys!

Carol has some great information up at her site, especially for those of you - or those who know other moms - who are just embarking on the parenting journey.

Carol has three sons and a daughter and seems to have figured out early on that our role as mothers of boys is not to break their wills and "tame" them to suit our feminine ideas of what works, but to allow God to work in our hearts and show us how we need to change to be the best moms we can be for future men.

(If you have boys, when you have a little time :) go to my category Boys and browse through the entries - and some great comments by readers - there.

Thanks, Carol! Love the pictures!

Love,

Barbara, we got a pair of these swords at Toys R Us last year for $5 each. I remembered my brothers having a similar toy and loving them, and since these are soft and foamy, they have been safe swords for our wee ones. (A teether might be able to bite a chunk off if he worked at it though). It is very often that I hear, "Mommy let's play pirates!" and out come the swords.

There is a *great* article by Bryan Davis (a Christian YA fantasy author) here.

It's about the heart of heroism in boys and girls, and how naturally it plays out in line with the roles God ordained: Champion and encourager. Protector and helpmeet.

And it has a nice little bit about swords (the picture's what made me think of it).

Barbara,

If you didn't already find those swords...here's my CHEAP method for MAKING THEM.

Get a large sheet of fun foam (thick gauge is best) and go to Home Depot or any house/hardware store - get foam pipe insulators. They have a sticky surface down the center. You peel the adhesive off and stick the two sides together. Then take the fun foam, cut a long rectangle (appx 6 inches long, 4 inches wide).

Using a pair of sharp scissors, fold the rectangle down about 2 inches and make a cut through both sides of the material, then fold length wise and make a cross-cut to form a + or x. Repeat at other end. Make the cut appx 1 inch long, so that when you unfold the fun foam the cut is appx 2 inches long.

Now you have holes in the "handle" to thread the foam pipe insulator through. INSTANT sword.

I made 4 of them yesterday (before I even saw this article!), and had made 4 for the neighborhood kids after Christmas. They have a blast battling with them!
