The perfect stepstool
A reader wrote looking for a recommendation for a step-stool. Believe me, with 12 kids spanning 38 years, I've been through my share.
I think if I had to pick one step-stool and one only - or one step-stool to spend my life with on a desert island? - it would be this one:
.
Perfect for enabling your child to climb up and help you with stuff at the kitchen counter. Relatively lightweight. And the top is padded so you can use it for a seat - not to mention helping mom herself reach the highest shelves.
For other ideas on creating a kid-friendly environment, see Barbara's Picks in the upper left sidebar.

I have this stool and love it! We have a small house, so it's out of the way when we don't need it because it folds. The only warning is to mothers of climbers like me: apparently, the top hand rail part was just another step to my two year old and when I heard his whimpers, I went into the kitchen to find his little toes curled around the top rail and his hand struggling to keep hold of a glass he was taking out of the cupboard, all while the stool was inching out away from the counter! Luckily, he held on til I got there. We remember better to put it away now. :)

I have that same stepstool. You forgot the best part - it folds up so you can stick it in the crack between the fridge and the wall!
My kids also use it as a personal table too - sit on the first step like an old fashioned school desk, using the top step as a table top.

Thanks for the recommendation! I was just thinking about getting a step stool. What age is old enough to start using it? Katherine will be one in October. I don't think she has enough balance yet to stand on a stool.
