Quiverfull article at Crosswalk today
My article is up at Crosswalk today:
Why some Evangelicals are throwing out birth control
I only had 1500 words, but was able to provide a link to the insights and personal experiences which led many of you to shift your paradigm from the prevailing cultural view of children as burdens to the more ancient wisdom of children as blessings (see Evangelicals birth control-free) . Your generosity in sharing your stories and what you have learned on your spiritual journeys greatly enriches this piece.
I'm sure your words will help change minds and hearts. Thank you so much for your contribution.

Barbara,
Great article! My husband and I gave up birth control after I read The Way Home more than 18 years ago when we had only one child. That child is now 22 and has siblings ages 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8. He could have been an only child.
I thank God for Mary Pride, as no one else was telling me that children were blessings (and I had been a church go-er all my life!). I became a Christian a few days before giving birth (at home) to our second child. And like you, did not find much support for my growing family. Relatives and church folks were the biggest criticizers.
Now I am thankful that you are encouraging young couples (and not so young couples) to look to God's word and trust Him for the blessing of children.
Many Blessings,
Kathy

Thank you for such a wonderful article! I too have been disappointed by some reactions in my church, but I have seen the tide change. I have influenced others, who swore they didn't want any more children to give it a try, and I see more families of more than 4 children cropping up there all the time. It is so good to get encouragement.
I actually read All the Way Home before I finally got my hands on a copy of The Way Home. Mary Pride was a visionary, as are you, Barbara. Keep up the good work. I write about my family at graymattersonline.net

OK, Barbara! I'm shifting my paradigm and I know, truly, that children are a blessing. And I do want more.
I have been struggling with this since I started reading your blog about 18months ago. That's when I stopped using the Pill.
This is very painful/emotional to write...It is hard for me to trust God materially when my income is half of what we live on. I get tears in my eyes at the thought of dropping off another baby at day care while I continue to work.
I am ready to cut corners and live on an even tighter budget, and I understand that I don't need to have a lot of money to spoil my kids with material things.
Yet all these years I thought my WORK was the way God was blessing my family. The fact that I could bring home another paycheck to keep us from having to rent in the more dangerous part of town.
The material side of this is very, very real to me. The trusting God part... And the nitty gritty of it- my husband has never had a job that has allowed me to be home with our children.
God would truly have to provide that job Himself because honestly, I don't think my husband would be willing to go looking for it. He is OK with the daycare. And not OK with me quitting work.
So that's where I am in the paradigm shift. Sort of at a standstill I'm afraid.
Thanks for your wonderful article and for sharing your life and wisdom.

I could not help but post a reply to the dear lady who identified herself at :)
I was touched by your post and your desire to stay home with your children, and possibly have more. I believe that a husband is the head of the household, and that his decisions should be honored, no matter how painful they may be. :(
Many women are in your shoes, wanting to be home with their children when their husband wants them to work. It breaks my heart.......but I truly believe that God wants you to honor you husband as you PRAY like crazy that he will change his mind. God * can* change his mind. Nagging won't help.......It's tough, and I've been in a position where I had to pray everytime I wanted to nag. God is big. He can change these circumstances for you. Blessings.....I hope you get to stay home AND have more children.

What a great article, Barbara! Once again you've hit the nail on the head! We, too, are an above-average family with six blessings and one on the way. I will admit that with this new pregnancy, our commitment to being quiverfull is waning because of our fifth child's struggle with Type 1 Diabetes. He is only three years old so the entire responsibility of his health care is on us; and believe me, it is a 25 hour a day job! :) We also homeschool so the children's education is a priority also. We are still praying for God's strength and wisdom!
If people would like to hear more about our adventures as an above-average family, they can visit our blog at www.afruitfulvine.typepad.com.
Also, I would like to post a family picture in the album, but I wasn't sure how to do that. Help!
God Bless!
In His Love,
Tammy

"If I could give you information of my life, it would show how a woman of very ordinary ability has been led by God to do in His service what He has done in her. You would see how God has done all, and I nothing. I have worked hard, very hard, that is all; and I HAVE NEVER REFUSED GOD ANYTHING." ~ Florence Nightingale
