Do the next thing

You know how Elisabeth Elliot always reminds us to "Do the next thing"? Here's the poem - author unknown:

Do the Next Thing

At an old English parsonage down by the sea,
there came in the twilight a message to me.
Its quaint Saxon legend deeply engraven
that, as it seems to me, teaching from heaven.
And all through the hours the quiet words ring,
like a low inspiration, 'Do the next thing.'

Many a questioning, many a fear,
many a doubt hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from heaven,
time, opportunity, guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrow, child of the King,
trust that with Jesus, do the next thing.

Do it immediately, do it with prayer,
do it reliantly, casting all care.
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand,
who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on omnipotence, safe 'neath His wing,
leave all resultings, do the next thing.

Looking to Jesus, ever serener,
working or suffering be thy demeanor,
in His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
the light of His countenance, be thy psalm.
Do the next thing.

Thank you so much! I hope you don't mind; I made a copy to put on my desktop......so I read it several times a day!
Bless you.

Thank you for your encouraging words on my blog. I appreciate it. We are so very thankful for Eliana and the joy she has brought to our lives.

I'm excited to read of your upcoming piece on adoption. This is something I've prayed about for years and am hoping it may be something God has for our family too. Having Eliana has given me the desire to add more children like her. :-)

Thank you for writing and encouraging others.

Blessings,
Leslie

PS I saw your piece on Moms of children with DS and sending a pic. I'll try to find one to send. I'll need to look more on what you'd like. Didn't know if you wanted one with parents - or just of the child. I know I have lots of photos. :-)
